The biggest mistakes you make with your car, according to this mechanic: "You're killing it."

TikTok user @frpassion.com on his official profile has revealed some of the most common and significant mistakes drivers make behind the wheel and has provided a series of tips to prevent irreversible damage to your vehicle in the short or medium term.

"If you do this every time you get in your car , you're slowly killing it , and you don't even realize it. Below, I'm going to explain five tips to help you take the best care of the most expensive parts and components that make up your vehicle," he added at the beginning of the video.

Tips for caring for your vehicle

First, the user explained that if the vehicle in question has a turbo, the ideal is to drive at low revs and perform gentle accelerations before reaching the destination: "If your car has a turbo, you'll know that it's a very expensive part. If we're coming from a long trip and we've been pushing the car, two kilometers before reaching the destination we're going to go very slowly and perform gentle accelerations and low revs."

What happens when we finally reach our destination? Well, under normal circumstances, users tend to turn off the engine... an incorrect action, according to the video's author: "When we arrive, we'll let the engine idle for two minutes to take care of this precious part. Afterwards, we turn off the engine ."

Secondly, the mechanic focuses on the 'Star-Stop' , which he encourages us to be slightly wary of and advises us to "partially or permanently disable it" : "This system is very efficient. With minimal energy and minimal effort, it will start the engine... but it ignores the previous advice. However, you can always remember to partially or permanently disable it by coding the vehicle."

The clutch, one of the most expensive parts

@frpassion.com, thirdly, explains what we should do to avoid further wear on the clutch , one of the most expensive parts of the vehicle, and a series of tips to extend its useful life: "This part is very expensive, both to buy and to change. If you are the typical person who waits at the traffic light with first gear engaged and the clutch depressed, you are making a huge mess of it. It is better to wait in neutral and without pressing the pedal, this way you will extend the useful life of the part."

"Avoid driving with your foot resting on the clutch . Even if you don't think you're applying any force, you're only applying minimal pressure... and this is causing premature wear. So, put your foot elsewhere and take care of your car," he emphasizes.

Last but not least, he focuses on air conditioning and its non-use throughout the year (except in summer), a factor that can be important for its operation: "Even if you're cold in winter, turn on the air conditioning at least once a week . The gas will circulate throughout the circuit and all its hoses, lubricating them and preventing them from cracking and leaking in the future. It will also prevent us from being left without air conditioning in summer, which is when this type of thing usually fails."
